About Hypnosis

A Brief History of Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis has been around in some form for thousands of years. During ancient times in India, Hindu healers often took the sick to "sleep temples". There, they were cured by hypnotic suggestion. This appears to be the original of the use of hypnotherapy as a means of creating health and wellness. Similar healing systems were used in ancient Greece and Egypt.

The term "hypnotism," however, didn't come into existence until it was coined by James Braid in 1841. Braid came up with the term "hypnotism" in an attempt to differentiate his approach from mesmerists, who rose to popularity in the 1600s. Early hypnotists throughout the 1800s discovered, among other things, the value of post-hypnotic suggestion, disassociation, and the power of hypnosis in improving emotional issues. During the Civil War, hypnosis was widely used doctors in the field for pain management.

The birth of modern hypnotherapy is widely considered to have begun in the 1920s at Yale University. Experimental Psychologist, Clark Hull published Hypnosis and Suggestibility, an in depth look at hypnotherapy backed up with data and statistics.

Throughout the 20th Century, hypnotherapy's credibility grew as a legitimate therapeutic modality. Approved by both the British Medical Association and American Medical Association, today's hypnotherapy can help patients to achieve a wide variety of goals, including weight-loss and relief from anxiety, stress, fear and phobias.
